Try the Club Under the Armpits Putting Tip

Anne Rollo demonstrates her drill for taking your arms and wrists out of your putting stroke for more consistent results on the green.

As you know I’m always going on about not using your wrists when you’re putting because an ideal putting stroke is all shoulders and really, no hands and wrists at all.

So what does it feel like to not use your hands and wrists? I know a lot of people that I teach struggle to know what that feels like and even when they feel that they are using their shoulders they end up still using a little bit too much hands and wrists.

Here’s a short video where I demonstrate a good drill you can use indoors or on the practice green to teach yourself how it feels to only use your shoulders during your putting stroke …. with bonus kangaroos.

  • A good little trick is to take another club, any old club will do – for example an old four iron or and pop it up underneath your armpits and across your chest.
  • It is going to be awkward.
  • Then take your putter and simulate your stroke.

What this does is really isolate the shoulders to give you the feel of the hands and arms having absolutely nothing to do with the stroke at all.

As I said, it’s going to feel very awkward but give it a try at home on the carpet because it quickly gives you the feel of having no hands and wrists in the putting stroke at all.
