How to Handle an Uphill Lie in a Bunker with Ease

PGA Instructor Kellie Stenzel shares her expert tips for navigating uphill lies in bunkers including shoulder alignment and club selection.

When you have an uphill lie near a bunker, it’s generally advantageous as the ball will launch higher. Adjust your shoulders to match the slope of the hill, which effectively increases the loft of your chosen wedge. For shorter shots, play it as a regular shot: align your shoulders, position the ball forward, dig your feet in, and make a regular swing. The ball will launch high and short, ideal for closer pins.

If you need to cover more distance, follow the same technique but choose a less lofted club to achieve a longer shot. Adjusting the club and matching your shoulders to the hill ensures the ball travels the desired distance while maintaining accuracy.

This approach helps manage the ball’s trajectory and distance effectively on challenging uphill lies.
