Do You Struggle to Get Out of Bunkers?

Standard bunker advice—opening the face and swinging "out-to-in"—can often be too complex and lead to inconsistent results. Alison Curdt shares a simplified approach that uses a square clubface and a specific "toe to the sky" backswing to ensure you clear the sand and get the ball onto the green in a single stroke.
Show/Hide Notes and Q&A

Simplify Your Approach: Traditional bunker technique often requires aiming far left and keeping the clubface extremely open. If this feels unnatural or isn’t creating success, you can simplify the shot by setting up like a normal pitch. Square the clubface to the target and move the ball slightly forward in your stance.

Toe to the Sky: The most critical part of this simplified shot is the rotation of the club during the backswing. As you move the club back, focus on making sure the “toe” of the club points directly toward the sky.

Avoid the Dig: If the clubface points toward the ground during the backswing, the leading edge will dig too deeply into the sand, leaving the ball behind. Conversely, if you swing too far inside, you risk hitting the top of the ball. A straight-back takeaway with the toe up allows the club to glide through the sand rather than getting stuck.

The Pitch-Out Finish: Once the toe is toward the sky, simply execute a standard pitching motion. This reliable, low-risk technique is designed to achieve one primary goal: getting you out of the bunker and onto the green in one shot every time.

Questions and Answers

Q: Should I still swing hard at the sand? A: Think of it like a pitch shot from the grass. Because you aren’t opening the face as drastically, you don’t need to swing with extreme force; the square face and ball-forward position will help the ball lift out naturally.

Q: Why is the “Toe to the Sky” position so important? A: It keeps the clubface in a neutral, stable position. If the face “shuts” (points to the ground), the club becomes a shovel. Keeping the toe up ensures the bounce of the club works correctly with the sand.

Q: Is this better than the “Open Face” method? A: It is a “simpler” way. While the open-face method allows for higher, softer-landing shots, the square-face pitch is much easier to time and is highly effective for golfers who just want to ensure they exit the bunker in one go.
