How to Hit a Good Chip Off a Bad Lie

Anne Rollo shows how to chip from poor lies (hardpan, dirt, or mud) by using a 7 or 8-iron instead of a high-lofted wedge.
Step-by-Step How to Apply This Lesson

Your Action Plan

What: Use a reduced loft club (7- or 8-iron) and a firm, controlled motion to chip off bad lies, promoting roll rather than carry.

Why: Using lower loft minimizes the risk of the leading edge digging into the hard ground and causing a bladed or duffed shot.

How to Execute the Shot:

Swing: Use a short, firm shoulder-driven swing (minimal hands/wrists). Focus on brushing underneath the ball to start the roll immediately.

Club/Grip: Choose a 7- or 8-iron (if possible) and grip down for control.

Setup: Position the ball around the middle of your stance. Lean your weight slightly onto your lead (front) foot.
