Master the Long Greenside Bunker Shot

The long bunker shot near the green is commonly considered one of the hardest shots in golf. Anne Rollo shows you how to decide whether to play it like a normal bunker shot or more like a fairway bunker shot.

Your Action Plan

What: Your goal is to learn the two strategic options for managing a long greenside bunker shot.

Why: It is often too difficult to generate enough clubhead speed to splash the sand and carry the ball 30, 40, or 50 meters like a normal bunker shot. Using a “pick” method is often safer for distance.

How:

OptionWhen to UseTechnique
1. The Splash (Normal Bunker Shot)Shorter distances (or if you are confident you can generate extreme speed).Play like a regular bunker shot, but use a Pitching Wedge and swing as hard as you can to splash the sand a long distance.
2. The Pick (Fairway Bunker Style)Longer distances (e.g., 30-50+ meters) and with a low lip.Treat it like a pitch shot off a tight lie. Use a Pitching Wedge, grip down, lean your weight forward, and aim to “pick the ball off the top” of the sand with minimal sand impact.

Key Reminder: You cannot use the pick technique if the bunker has a high lip.
