How to Hit 3 Different Shots: The Chip, Pitch and Flop Shot

In this Titleist lesson Trillium Rose shows you how to use one club—a 58-degree wedge—to hit three different shots. By adjusting your setup and swing, you can hit low-running chips, mid-height shots, and high, soft-landing lobs, all with one wedge.

Your Action Plan

What: Your goal is to learn how to use a single club to hit a variety of greenside shots by adjusting your swing.

Why: Mastering a single-club approach for different shots simplifies your short game decisions and helps you adapt to various lies without changing clubs.

How:

  • The Low Runner: For a shot with more roll, play the ball in the middle of your stance, keep your weight forward, and use your torso to rotate through.
  • The Mid-Height Shot: For more distance, add a wrist hinge on the backswing and unhinge on the downswing to generate more clubhead speed.
  • The High Flop Shot: For a high-flying shot that stops quickly, open the clubface, hinge your wrists dramatically, and rotate through with a lot of speed.
