Good Balance is the Most Important Fundamental

Erika Larkin from True Swing Golf shows why balance is the most underrated fundamental in golf. Learn what happens when balance breaks down, how to identify issues in your own swing, and simple ways to improve your balance.

Your Action Plan

What: Your goal is to improve your balance in the golf swing to achieve more consistent and powerful contact.

Why: Balance is crucial for controlling your low point and hitting the center of the clubface, as a lack of balance can lead to compensations and poor contact.

How:

  • Check Your Finish: After each swing, hold your finish for at least five seconds. You should be balanced on your lead foot, facing the target without wobbling or falling.
  • Toe Tap Test: Perform the “toe tap” test at the end of your swing by lifting and tapping the toes of your trail foot twice. This confirms you are fully balanced on your lead side.
  • Find an Athletic Stance: At setup, take an athletic posture with your weight centered, or slightly on the balls of your feet, to encourage stability.
  • Stay Within Your Footprints: Avoid swaying or sliding past the “shadows” of your footprints during your swing to maintain leverage and balance.
