Get Out of Trouble with the Punch Shot

Are you facing a tight lie with debris or an obstacle that demands a low, controlled ball flight? Anne and Dennise demonstrate the versatile punch shot, the perfect "damage control" strategy for any difficult situation. Learn the simple setup and swing adjustments that ensure you hit the ball first and get it safely back into play.

Your Action Plan

What: Your goal is to master the punch shot—a low, running shot used to escape awkward lies, debris, or overhanging obstacles.

Why: The punch shot is a conservative, smart strategy that minimizes the risk of a disastrous, high-scoring hole by ensuring solid contact and a low ball flight that runs toward the target.

How:

  • Remove Debris Safely: Carefully clear only the large debris that will interfere with your swing, ensuring you do not move the ball (which would incur a penalty).
  • Choose Less Loft: Select a club with less loft (like a 4-iron, 5-iron, or 7-iron) to ensure a low trajectory.
  • Adjust Your Setup:
    • Grip Down: Grip down on the club for better control.
    • Ball Back: Play the ball back in your stance (which further de-lofts the club).
    • Lean Left: Lean your weight slightly toward the target (lead foot).
  • Swing and Finish: Use a short, abbreviated swing and follow-through. The focus is on hitting the ball first and letting the club’s setup changes produce the low, running flight.
