Your Action Plan
What: Your goal is to learn a consistent setup modification that allows you to take distance off a longer club when you’re caught between yardages.
Why: It is generally safer to hit a longer club gently than to try and over-swing a shorter club. Throttling down a club is easier and more repeatable than pressing for extra distance.
How:
- Choose the Longer Club: Always default to the club that’s going to go a little bit too far (the bigger club).
- Grip Down: Grip down an inch on the handle to shorten the effective length of the club.
- Use an Open Stance: Pull your lead foot back just a little bit. This slight open stance is the key to limiting your swing.
- Keep Weight Forward: Maintain your weight over the lead foot (the side toward the target).
- Make a Small Swing: The combination of the shorter grip and open stance will naturally limit your backswing, encouraging you to make a smaller, controlled swing without having to press for power.
