Bad Lie in the Sand? Play the Anti-Bunker Shot

When you find yourself buried deep in a pot bunker here's Kristin Walla on how to serve that fried egg perfectly. Forget how you normally hit a bunker shot and do the exact opposite.

Your Action Plan

What: Your goal is to learn the technique for successfully playing a buried lie (fried egg) in a deep bunker.

Why: A buried lie requires the opposite of a normal bunker shot. You must create a digging action to get the club deep enough under the ball and use the sand’s explosion to lift the ball out.

How:

  • Forget the Glide: Instead of setting up for a “gliding” shot (open stance, open face), set up for a “digging” shot.
  • Close the Face (Digger Setup): Square the clubface (or even slightly close it) to use the leading edge as a “digger” or “backhoe.”
  • Shift Your Weight: Set your body and weight way in front of the ball.
  • Swing Aggressively: Take an aggressive swing with a lot of wrist action (hinge).
  • Dig and Explode: Focus on digging the club into the sand behind the ball to explode it straight up and out of the bunker.
