Three Quick Tips to Fix Your Slice

Grip, clubface, path. LPGA Instructor Kristin Walla has 3 great ways to cure that left to right (for right handers) curving ball.
How to Apply this Lesson Step-by-Step

Your Action Plan: Three Quick Fixes for Your Slice 🛠️

This plan outlines three steps to fix a slice by promoting a square/closed clubface and an inside-out swing path.

1. Fix the Grip (Close the Face)

  • Action: Ensure you are using a stronger grip by holding the club more in your fingers.
  • Check: When you wrap your hands around the club, you should easily be able to see a few knuckles on your lead hand (left hand for right-handers). Look for the logo on your glove (like the FootJoy logo) to be visible.
  • Result: A stronger grip helps the clubface square up or slightly close through impact, neutralizing the slice spin.

2. Stop the Flip (Control the Release)

  • Action: Practice swinging through impact while consciously keeping your lead palm facing the ground (or down).
  • The Feel: The cue is to “Stop in the Name of Love” (stopping the palm from flipping up).
  • Result: This prevents the tendency to flip the clubface open at impact, which causes slices.

3. Adjust the Path (Swing Inside-Out)

Result: This alignment immediately puts you on a path to swing more from the inside, which is the first step toward hitting a powerful draw.

Action: Adjust your setup to encourage an inside-out swing path and counter the tendency for the shoulders to create an out-to-in path (pulling left).

Setup Adjustment: Drop your trail foot, trail hip, and trail shoulder slightly back (away from the target line).
