Master Shots on an Upslope: 3 Setup Adjustments for Clean Contact

Hitting off an upslope can easily throw off your contact and balance. LPGA Professional Sara Davis shares three simple setup adjustments to help you match the slope and hit a great shot.

Lesson Notes: Three Setup Keys for Upslope Lies

The Goal: To adjust your physical address position so that your body and club perfectly match the incline of an upslope, ensuring clean and solid contact.

1. Raise the Shaft Height

  • Get the Sole Flat: When setting up on an upslope, you need to hold the club shaft just a little bit higher.
  • Sole Interaction: This adjustment helps position the bottom of your clubhead flat against the rising ground.

2. Stand Closer to the Ball

  • Stance Adjustment: Make a conscious effort to stand just a little bit closer to the golf ball at address.

3. Match Your Shoulder Angle

  • Angle Your Shoulders: Tilt your shoulders so that their angle directly matches the slope of the lie you are hitting off of.

FAQ

Q: Why is getting the bottom of the club flat so important on an upslope?

A: Slopes naturally distort how the club sits relative to the ball. Raising the shaft slightly flattens the sole of the club against the slanted turf, which ensures that you use the club’s true bounce and avoid digging or catching the shot thin.

Q: What happens if my shoulders stay level instead of matching the slope?

A: If your shoulders remain level on an upslope, your swing path will naturally fight the hill. You will likely drive the clubhead straight into the rising turf behind the ball, resulting in a severe chunk, or lift up too early and thin the shot. Angling your shoulders allows you to swing smoothly along the contour of the slope.

Why Women's Golf is different.

We're not part of some big media company. My husband Richard and I started Women's Golf from our living room because I couldn't find golf lessons that were truly designed for women golfers. I wanted to create the kind of place I wished had existed, a welcoming and ad-free home where golfers like us could learn from the world's best instructors.

We bought the domain name at an auction and I started contacting the world's best teachers. My job is to look after all our members, our instructors and the lessons we share, while Richard takes care of the technology behind the scenes that keeps Women's Golf running.
