Lesson Notes: Master Your Alignment
The Goal: To ensure that your clubface is square to the target and your body is positioned to support a straight swing path.
The Intermediate Target Routine:
- Find Your Target: Stand behind the ball and identify your ultimate target in the distance.
- Pick a Spot: Identify an “intermediate target”—a leaf or divot—about 1–2 feet directly in front of your ball on your target line.
- Square the Face: Set your clubface down first, making sure it is perfectly square to that intermediate spot.
- Align the Body: Align your feet, hips, and shoulders parallel to the target line.
The “Railroad Tracks” Visual:
- The outer rail is your target line (Ball to Target).
- The inner rail is your body line (Feet, Hips, Shoulders).
- These lines should run parallel and never cross.
FAQ
Q: Why pick a target only 1-2 feet in front of the ball?
A: Squaring a clubface to something 2 feet away is much easier than 200 yards away. It minimizes the small setup errors that become massive misses downrange.
Q: Should my feet be pointed directly at the hole?
A: No. Because you stand to the side of the ball, your feet should be parallel to the target line. Aiming feet at the hole actually results in a “closed” stance.
Q: I feel like I’m aimed too far left when parallel. Is that normal?
A: Yes! If you’ve been compensating for poor alignment, correct alignment will feel “open” at first. Trust the geometry over your “feel.”
Q: Does alignment affect the clubface at impact?
A: Absolutely. Open shoulders often lead to an out-to-in swing path, causing a slice. Squaring the entire body ensures a neutral path through the ball.
