Smart Bunker Strategy: How Sand & Slope Dictate Your Club Choice

Automatically reaching for a 58 or 60-degree lob wedge in fluffy sand can backfire. Erika Larkin shows how to evaluate the terrain, assess bounce, and choose the right wedge for delicate bunker shots

Lesson Notes: Reading the Lie & Smart Bunker Club Selection

The Goal: Match the correct wedge bounce and loft to fluffy sand on an uphill lie, allowing for a compact, controlled swing that places short bunker shots close to the pin.

Evaluating the Bunker Lie

  • Sand Texture: Check whether the sand is dry and fluffy or firm and wet. Dry, fluffy sand requires adequate bounce to splash through without digging.
  • Slope Angle: An uphill slope naturally adds effective loft to whatever club face you present to the ball.

Why the Gap Wedge Works on Uphill Sand Lies

Using a 58 or 60-degree lob wedge on an uphill lie sends the ball straight up, forcing you to make an excessively large, risky swing for a short shot. A 52-degree gap wedge solves this:

  • Managed Loft: The lower base loft balances out the extra loft created by the uphill slope, letting you take a small, controlled swing to cover a short distance.
  • Higher Bounce: Gap wedges often carry higher bounce angles (e.g., 14 degrees versus 8 degrees on many lob wedges), preventing the clubhead from digging into thick sand.

Execution & Setup Keys

  • Stance: Dig your feet firmly into the sand to create a stable base.
  • Face Position: Do not open the face excessively; the uphill slope is already providing height, so only a slight opening is needed.
  • Motion: Use a normal bunker stroke with standard wrist hinge, taking a smaller, confident swing and letting the bounce of the sole splash through the sand.

FAQ

Q: Why shouldn’t I use my standard lob wedge for a short uphill bunker shot?

A: An uphill slope increases the launch angle of your shot. Combining a high-lofted 58 or 60-degree wedge with an uphill lie creates too much height, requiring a huge swing that is difficult to distance-control when the pin is nearby.

Q: How does sole bounce affect performance in fluffy sand?

A: Higher bounce acts as a skid plate on the bottom of the wedge. In dry, fluffy sand, high bounce stops the leading edge from digging deep into the bunker, allowing the clubhead to slide smoothly through the sand under the ball.

Firm Sand in Bunkers? Here's What To Do
When rain or lack of sand leaves a greenside bunker packed tight and firm, a standard splash shot will bounce off the ground and blade the ball over the green. LPGA Top 50 Instructor Kellie Stenzel shows you how to adjust your setup to safely dig the ball out.
