Advice on Handling a Long Term Injury

I recently got a message from Paul Irwin from the Arsenal Football Club giving me some helpful inspiration about how they handle long term injuries.

Often the professional players are expected to play, but when they’re injured, everyone wants to know when they can get back. The pressure is on them to get back. I know most of us are not professional athletes, but we still can feel the pressure to get back on our feet to the way we were. However, with long-term injuries that setback can be really gruelling.

He said they go about it by focusing on one week stretches and focusing on that week and that weeks goals. Instead of thinking that I can’t put weight on my ankle for six weeks I think about what I’m doing THIS week and what progress I can achieve THIS week.

It’s really similar to tackling a big project. Instead of thinking about the daunting task in front of you break it into steps. This made a whole lot of sense to me and makes it a lot easier to except the timeline for me.

I hope this helps you if you are managing an injury that is effecting your golf game.
