Fix Your Chipping Setup

Stop struggling with inconsistent contact around the green. Erika Larkin demonstrates how simplifying your stance and getting closer to the ball leads to clean, crisp chip shots every time.

Lesson Notes: The 60-Second Chipping Fix

The Core Problem: Inconsistent chipping is rarely a swing flaw; it is almost always a setup flaw. Most golfers set up too wide, stand too far from the ball, and create too much “twist” with their body and shaft lean.

The Solution (The Setup Reset):

  • Narrow the Stance: Keep your feet close together. There should only be about 1 to 3 clubhead widths between your feet.
  • Get Closer: Stand closer to the ball and stand a little taller. This creates a more vertical, controllable pendulum motion.
  • Subtle Foot Flare: Flare your lead foot slightly toward the target to allow for a smoother rotation.
  • Lean to the Green: Shift your weight slightly toward your lead side (the target). Ensure the lean is subtle and not overly dramatic.

The Result: By simplifying these variables, you create a stable “engine” that produces clean, crisp contact and predictable distance every time.

FAQ

Q: Why suggest standing closer to the ball for chipping?

A: Standing closer and taller helps eliminate the “reaching” motion that causes many golfers to thin or chunk the ball. It allows the arms to hang naturally and move the club on a steeper, more consistent path.

Q: What is the “1-3 clubhead widths” rule?

A: This refers to the width of your stance. A narrow stance prevents excessive weight shifting, which is a major cause of “fat” and “thin” chips.

Q: Should I lean my weight forward significantly during the chip?

A: You should “lean to the green,” but keep it subtle. Over-leaning or creating extreme shaft lean can cause the leading edge of the club to dig too sharply into the turf.

Q: Is the goal of this setup to change my swing?

A: No. The goal is to simplify the setup so that your natural swing produces better contact. By fixing the “address,” you remove the need for compensations during the swing.

Q: What is “foot flare” and why does it matter?

A: Foot flare is turning your lead toe slightly toward the hole. This helps your hips clear more easily, ensuring you don’t get “stuck” or “twisted” as you rotate toward the target.
