The Simple Setup Secret for Crisp Chipping Contact

If you tend to hang back or try to lift your chip shots like a tennis player, this simple setup adjustment will fix your stroke instantly. Watch Kellie Stenzel explain how keeping your trail heel up leads to clean ball then turf contact every time.

Lesson Notes: Crisp Chipping Contact with Trail Heel Up

The Goal: Ensure proper ball then turf contact on basic chip shots by locking your body weight forward and eliminating the urge to lift or scoop the ball into the air.

The Common Chipping Mistake

  • Hanging Back and Lifting: Many players (especially those with tennis backgrounds) try to incorrectly lift the ball into the air at impact.
  • Shifting Weight Backward: Falling back onto the trail foot causes the club to bottom out early, resulting in fat or bladed shots.

Setup & Fix: Trail Heel Up

  • Lift the Trail Heel: At address, lift your trail heel slightly off the ground and keep it elevated throughout the entire swing.
  • Maintain Forward Lean: Keeping the heel up forces your weight forward and keeps your spine angled toward the target.
  • Ball-Then-Turf Contact: This setup adjustment almost guarantees hitting the golf ball first and the ground second for clean, repeatable contact.
  • Playable On the Course: You can use this exact setup on the course during actual play to stay confident over short chips.

FAQ

Q: Why should my weight stay forward on a basic chip shot?

A: Keeping your weight forward shifts the lowest point of your swing arc ahead of the ball. This ensures you strike the ball cleanly before the club makes contact with the turf.

Q: Can I actually use the trail heel up setup when playing a real round?

A: Yes. Lifting your trail heel is both a practice drill and a effective setup variation for real play whenever you want extra insurance against hanging back or scooping.

No More Fat Shots with the Scrape Drill
Hitting fat, chunked shots happens when your swing bottoms out too far behind the golf ball, leading to a massive loss in distance and direction. LPGA Master Professional Dr. Alison Curdt explains how combining rotation with a forward mass shift moves your swing arc forward for crisp, clean compression.

Why Women's Golf is different.

We're not part of some big media company. My husband Richard and I started Women's Golf from our living room because I couldn't find golf lessons that were truly designed for women golfers. I wanted to create the kind of place I wished had existed, a welcoming and ad-free home where golfers like us could learn from the world's best instructors.

We bought the domain name at an auction and I started contacting the world's best teachers. My job is to look after all our members, our instructors and the lessons we share, while Richard takes care of the technology behind the scenes that keeps Women's Golf running.
