Use Less Loft and a Shorter Swing to Improve Your Chipping

Senior Coach at the International Junior Golf Academy, Daniel Jackson shows you how to improve your chipping with the right club selection and technique.

In this video with my student Emma, we are going to look at the club selection and techniques you need to really improve your chipping. Many times I hear the advice to stick to only one club for their short game and usually, everyone goes for a 56-degree wedge. Instead of that, what I really like to see is students using a variety of different clubs but keeping the same technique.

Selecting a club for chipping that gives you the highest probability of success is a lot easier than you think. The more lofted club you use, the longer the swing needs to be. When you use less loft, the swing is shorter and there is less room to make a mistake.

With a clear idea of what type of shot you would like to hit, good chipping technique (see below), and some chipping practice, you will have the best chance of hitting a great shot.

Step-by-Step Technique to Improve Your Chipping

Your feet should be close together with the toes pointing just left of the golf ball.
Grip down on the club and stand closer to the ball.
Have your ball position just slightly forward of center. The ball should be back of the breastbone.
Your feet, knees, hips, and shoulders should be just left of the target.
The biceps of both of your arms should rest slightly on your chest.
As the club swings back, the butt end of the club should stay close to the groin area. In both the backswing and follow through.

My student in this video is 15-year-old Emma Kim. Emma comes from Uslan, South Korea and has been playing golf for 2 years. Her favorite golfer is Sung Hyun Park. Emma’s goal is to become an LPGA Golfer and compete against the best players in the world. Follow Emma’s progress on Instagram
