Sugarloaf Golf Club in the Fall

World-renowned golf course photographer, Evan Schiller, recalls his late-season shoot at the stunning Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Sugarloaf Golf Course.

I have been shooting for Boyne Golf for a number of years and have just completed my 4th trip to Northern Michigan where they own and operate 10 courses. However, last year they asked me to shoot Sugarloaf Golf Club which is a course they own and operate in the mountains of Maine.

I’d always been interested in going to Sugarloaf, especially in the fall to capture the foliage. Upon arriving early last October, I was awestruck by the beauty of this place. The entire course is carved out of the woods at the base of Sugarloaf Mountain so as you make your way around you are surrounded by a sea of colors and the mountain views. However, the piece de resistance is the view from the downhill par-3 11th tee which overlooks the valley and distant mountains as you can see from the photo below.

I spent four days shooting Sugarloaf Golf Club last October and every morning my first stop was to go to the 11th tee and take in the view and capture some images of the amazing scene. The 11th is part of a stretch known as the String of Pearls, which is a six-hole sequence that runs alongside the Carrabassett River.

I’ve photographed close to 600 golf courses worldwide in my life, and Sugarloaf in the fall ranks as one of the most spectacular spots I’ve ever been to.

I used an Inspire 1 & 2 drone to capture aerial images and when shooting from the ground a Hasselblad H6D-50.

Sugarloaf Golf Club is located in the Carrabassett Valley, Maine. More information about visiting this spectacular course is available at sugarloaf.com.
