Three Tips to Sink More Putts

Missing those crucial 5-foot putts can derail a great round. Iron Lady Golf founder Lindsay Knowlton shares three easy-to-remember cues, from proper grip pressure to a disciplined head position, that will instantly improve your alignment, tempo, and consistency on the greens.

Lesson Notes: Three Fundamentals for Consistent Putting

The Goal: To eliminate tension, establish an even tempo, and improve accuracy on short putts from five feet and in using three simple visualization techniques.

1. The “Baby Bird” Grip

  • Light Pressure: When gripping the putter, you should hold the handle gently, as if you are cradling a delicate baby bird in your hands.
  • Rhythmic Balance: Avoid squeezing the grip tightly. Keeping your hands relaxed ensures a smooth, equal tempo as the putter travels back and through the ball.

2. The “Shoe to Shoe” Stroke

  • Symmetrical Length: For short putts measuring five feet and under, aim for an identical distance on both sides of the ball.
  • Even Distribution: Think of the stroke as moving symmetrically from shoe to shoe. This visual boundary guarantees a highly balanced and even acceleration through impact.

3. The “One-Second” Rule

  • Resist the Peek: Looking up prematurely to track the ball’s path often pulls the putter face offline before contact is complete.
  • Hold Posture: Intentionally keep your head completely down for one full second after striking the ball before raising your eyes to look. Set up, stroke, count “one”, and only then look up.

FAQ

Q: How does excessive grip pressure directly alter my putting stroke?

A: Squeezing too hard introduces tension into your forearms and shoulders, which acts like a brake on your natural rhythm. A tight grip often causes a jerky transition, leading to inconsistent distance control and a tendency to push or pull the ball away from your target line.

Q: Should the “shoe-to-shoe” rule be applied to long lag putts across the green?

A: The “shoe-to-shoe” framework is specifically calibrated for short, high-precision putts from five feet and in to ensure an even, controlled stroke. Longer lag putts will naturally require a wider backswing and follow-through that extends past your feet to generate the necessary distance, though the emphasis on an equal back-and-through tempo remains exactly the same.
