Are the Kordas Golf’s Best Sister Act Ever?

Three sets of sisters have won LPGA tournaments. Tony Jesselli shows why Jessica and Nelly Korda are the standout siblings.

The LPGA has completed the first two tournaments of its 2021 season. In case you haven’t been paying attention, the first tournament was won by Jessica Korda and the second one was won by her sister Nelly. How unusual are sister acts on the LPGA you might ask?

From its inception, the LPGA has had the presence of sisters. Alice and Marlene Bauer were among the 13 women who founded the organization.

Marlene (who played as Marlene Hagge) won 26 times, but Alice never won.

Donna and Janet Capone had similar results as Janet won 24 times (including 4 majors), while sister Janet failed to win a single tournament. As the years went by, Danielle Ammaccapane won seven LPGA tournaments, but her sister Dina failed to register a win.

So have sisters ever both won on the LPGA?
Yes. It has been done three times!

It was first done by Annika and Charlotta Sorenstam. As you may well know, Annika won 72 times on the LPGA Tour. Her sister Charlotta joined the winner’s circle when she won the 2000 Standard Register PING. That was her only victory.

This feat was then accomplished by the Jutanugarns. Ariya Jutanugarn has won 10 LPGA tournaments to date. Her sister Moriya has won just one.

Then Came the Korda sisters.
Jessica and Nelly Korda became the third sister act to both win on the LPGA when Nelly won in October of 2018. Nelly’s victory this past week was her fourth on the LPGA, while her sister Jessica has won six times. They have become the only sister act where both players have won more than once.

Why do I think the Korda sisters are the greatest golf sister act ever?
The answer to that in my opinion is easy. While Annika Sorenstam is a World Golf Hall of Famer, her sister only won once. That brings us to the Jutanugarns. Ariya is only 25 years old and is a ten time winner, but she has not won since 2018 covering over 50 starts. Can she win again? Sure she can, but she is not trending in the right direction. Sister Moriya has just one victory in well over 200 LPGA starts. Ariya, a former No.1, has fallen to No.23 in the Rolex World Rankings, while her sister is No. 43.

Jessica Korda is 28 years old and when healthy appears to be at the peak of her career. Nelly is just 22 years old. Nelly has already skyrocketed to No. 3 in the Rolex World Rankings, while her sister has moved back up to No. 18. Their back to back victories to start the 2021 season has made them, in my opinion, the best sister act in LPGA history!
