Getting your club on the correct plane early in your backswing is critical if you want to make a good connection with the ball and get more consistent results.
Most amateurs I see really struggle to get the club on plane and generally, the struggle starts from the very beginning of the swing during their takeaway sequence.
Common faults at the start of the takeaway are players either pushing their hands out or bringing the club too far inside. In this video, I demonstrate a practice drill for my visual learners using two clubs aligned on the ground that guide the correct takeaway path.
How to practice getting your club on plane in your takeaway
Firstly, put two clubs down on the ground in front of you parallel to each other. One club shaft should be in line with your feet and the other on the ball line a couple of feet behind the ball so that you don’t hit it on your backswing.
As you start your takeaway, watch out of the corner of your eye to check that you are taking your hands back along the club shaft lined up with your feet. At the same time, you should be seeing the head of your club tracking in a straight line above the shaft of the club lined up behind the ball.
So, the key to this drill is as you take your hands straight back, make sure your club head also travels straight along the shaft that is in line with the ball.
This simple takeaway alignment drill that you can do when on the range or practicing by yourself on the course is going to really help you learn how to get the club on plane right at the start of your backswing.
