Lesson Notes: The Towel Drill for Pure Iron Strikes
The Goal: To improve iron contact and avoid thin or fat shots by ensuring the club head bottoms out directly at the golf ball rather than behind it.
The Setup:
- Place your golf ball on a very low tee.
- Lay your standard golf towel flat on the turf exactly one club head width behind the ball.
- Select a mid-iron for this practice drill.
How it Works:
- The Objective: Execute a normal, smooth swing and strike the golf ball cleanly without nicking or disturbing the towel first.
- Inside Swing Path: This visual boundary forces a slightly downward strike on the ball, but the spacing still leaves plenty of room for the club head to travel naturally from the inside.
- Perfect Low Point: Successfully missing the towel trains your hands and body to shift the bottom of your swing arc closer to the ball, resulting in excellent contact every single time.
FAQ
Q: What does it mean if my club catches the towel on the way down?
A: Catching the towel means your swing is bottoming out too early. Out on the golf course, this exact same path causes heavy “duffed” shots or thin “skulled” strikes because the club head is already ascending by the time it reaches the ball.
Q: Why practice with the ball on a low tee first?
A: Elevating the ball slightly on a low tee builds instant confidence and offers a clear visual target. Once you can consistently make clean contact without moving the towel, you can drop the ball down directly onto the turf.
