How to Adjust for the Slope in Bunkers

Maria Palozola shows how to properly adjust your stance and swing when you have an uneven lie in the bunker.

When you find yourself in a bunker with an uneven lie, it can be difficult to know how to adjust your stance and swing. Here are a few tips to help you hit the ball out of the bunker and onto the green.

1. Align your hips and shoulders with the slope of the sand.

This will help you make a smooth, fluid swing that is in line with the slope. If your hips and shoulders are not aligned with the slope, you will be more likely to make a jerky swing that can result in a poor shot.

2. Swing along the slope.

As you swing the club, follow the slope of the sand with the head of the club. This will help you make contact with the sand behind the ball and create the desired “splash” effect.

3. Aim left for downhill lies and right for uphill lies (If you are left handed do the opposite).

This will help you compensate for the natural tendency of the ball to curve when hit from an uneven lie.

4. Use a sand wedge or lob wedge.

These clubs have more loft, which will help you get the ball out of the sand and onto the green.

5. Practice makes perfect.

The more you practice hitting bunker shots from uneven lies, the better you will become at it.

Here are some additional tips that may help you hit a bunker shot from an uneven lie:

  • Open the clubface slightly. This will help you create more loft and make it easier to get the ball out of the sand.
  • Keep your weight on your front foot. This will help you maintain your balance and make a smooth, fluid swing.
  • Accelerate through the sand. This will help you create the desired “splash” effect and get the ball out of the bunker.

With a little practice, you will be able to hit bunker shots from uneven lies with confidence.
