Lesson Notes: Generating Power from a Short Backswing
The Goal: To help golfers with limited rotation or height in their backswing generate professional speed without “pulling” the ball left or rushing the chest.
1. The Eyeline Hack (Keep the Chest Back)
- When the backswing is short, players often rotate the chest open too early, leading to a pull.
- The Fix: Keep your eyeline focused behind the ball until just after impact.
- If your eyes move ahead of the ball, your chest follows, ruining your sequence.
2. The “Lead Butt” Transition
- To create speed, your lower body must initiate the downswing.
- The Magic Move: Get your lead butt moving back and deep before your hands even reach the top of the backswing.
- This “blends” the backswing and downswing, making the strike feel effortless and fast.
3. The Full Shoulder Wrap
- Once the lower body starts the move, you must commit to the finish.
- Bring your back shoulder all the way around the shot to maintain momentum and speed.
FAQ
Q: Why does my swing feel “jumpy” or abrupt on short swings?
A: This usually happens when the chest tries to pull the club through to the left side too soon. Keeping your eyes behind the ball helps keep the chest back and stays in sequence.
Q: Should I try to keep my head down as long as possible?
A: No. While you want your eyeline behind the ball at impact, you must let your head come up naturally afterward. If you hold it down too long, it will block your finish.
Q: Can I really get distance without a full rotation?
A: Absolutely. Speed comes from the sequence of the transition (the lead butt move) and the full release of the back shoulder, not just the length of the backswing.
