Stop Disconnecting: The Secret to a Perfect Golf Takeaway

Getting disconnected right out of the gate is a common tendency that completely messes up your clubface and ruins impact. Christina Ricci shows you how to properly rotate your chest in posture to maintain a tight arm-to-torso connection during the takeaway.

Lesson Notes: Mastering Connection in the Takeaway

The Goal: To eliminate early disconnection out of the gate by maintaining a strong chest-to-arm connection, setting the club on a better plane for solid impact.

The Common Problem:

  • Golfers often get lazy with their torso and fail to move their chest right at the start of the swing.
  • This lack of rotation causes the hands to work out and skirt around the chest, creating an unwanted gap.
  • This early disconnection alters the clubface angle and throws the clubhead onto a poor, often laid-off plane, leading to poor impact.
  • Players frequently add excessive forearm rotation during this phase instead of letting the club work naturally.

The Solution: The Connected Chest Turn

  • Zip It Up: Keep your lead arm firmly connected to the upper part of your torso right out of the gate.
  • Rotate in Posture: Turn your chest and torso together with your arms. Make sure to stay bent over in your golf posture rather than turning your chest level.
  • Maintain Width: Keep your hands far from your body to ensure excellent width; do not let the swing get narrow as you move inside.
  • Let It Hinge: When you turn your chest properly with zero extra forearm rotation, the club will naturally hinge up vertically on its own.
  • Allow Late Elevation: Remember that this intense connection is only for the takeaway. As you reach the top of the swing, your arms must elevate and naturally create space.

FAQ

Q: How should the clubface feel during a properly connected takeaway?

A: Because you are eliminating manual forearm rotation, the clubface should feel like it is going back relatively shut compared to a disconnected swing where the face hangs open.

Q: Should I try to keep my arms pinned to my chest through the entire backswing?

A: No. Keeping that rigid connection all the way to the top will restrict your movement. The tight chest-to-arm connection is strictly for the initial takeaway; after that point, your arms must elevate and create natural space at the top of the swing.
