What You Can Learn From Jin Young Ko’s Swing

Pete Kelbel puts his analysis spotlight on 2020 CME Group Tour Championship winner, Jin Young Ko. What can you model for your own swing?

Jin Young Ko is an LPGA winner and consistently earning top ten finishes and will continue to accomplish great success because her golf swing is so fundamentally solid.

High Definition Video of Jin Young Ko’s Driver Swing – Face On

Here is some great slow motion video of rising Korean player, Jin Young Ko courtesy of GolfSwingHD. Pause the video at the time point on the video (mm:ss) to match my comments.

Driver Set-Up Tips – 00:01

See how Jin Young Ko’s feet are slightly wider than her shoulders? Remember, the longer the club, the wider the feet. The ball is forward with centered hands which helps contact the ball ever so slightly on the upswing as we want to carry the ball in the air as far as possible with the driver.

Takeaway Tips – 00:08

I like how her left knee kicked back a bit as she has begun to turn her back toward the target. Everything works together as she also demonstrates great width with the shaft parallel with her toes with extension in the arms.

Half Way Back Tips – 00:12

When her left arm is parallel with the ground, note how her back has turned more as she continues loading into the braced and resisting right side. She doesn’t sway a bit to the right! I also like the distance from her hands to her head as this demonstrates outstanding width!

At The Top Tips00:17

Her back is turned 90 degrees to the target. Her wrists are cocked with the shaft pointing at the target. The majority of her weight has been loaded onto the braced and resisting right side.

Note: See the distance from her right thigh to the tree behind her. She will make a powerful move forward and around exposing another tree behind her as she goes from here. Her eyes stay focused on the ball.

Start of Downswing Tips – 00:18

Her left hip nudges a bit forward as it leads the downswing. It is always a good idea to check wrist cock lag at this point when her left arm is parallel with the ground on the downswing. I love how her shaft is pointing to 1:00, creating the powerful 45 degree angle. This demonstrates a lot of stored lag. You do not want to see a 90 degree angle or more at this point as this would indicate an early release, or “casting”.

Impact Area Tips – 00:20

Now you see how she has moved forward quite a bit and you can see another tree behind her! Her right knee is transferring the weight back toward the target. The right side was loaded by turning a twisting upper body into a resisting lower body. She has a lot of torque to unleash! Note how she still has her eyes focused on the golf ball. She stays behind the ball really well. The body is moving forward, but her head isn’t moving forward yet!

Jin Young Ko - just after impact

Follow Through Just after Impact Tips – 00:23

Her left foot now has almost all the weight. She extends the shaft and her arms down the target line beautifully.

Finish Tips – 00:33

Jin Young releases her head and is in a position to watch her ball cruise far and straight down the middle of the fairway! She also demonstrates great rotation to go along with the forward or lateral move noted earlier. The downswing has that “special mix” of “forward and around sequence”. See how her right shoulder is in the lead toward the target, then her head, then her left shoulder. This proves a proper release. They do not finish in a tie!

I always like to see the back foot balanced and up on the toes, showing everybody behind you the entire bottom of your rear foot! This shows a complete and balanced weight transfer. The club shaft is released behind her real well as it points from 11:00 to 4:00!

Master the fundamentals like Jin Young Ko has and you will definitely continue to improve with a very efficient swing!
