Escape Fairway Bunkers with Your Favorite Lofted Hybrid

Learn how to use your 5 or 6-hybrid to escape fairway bunkers with ease. Kellie Stenzel shares the simple setup and swing adjustments needed to take sand and get the ball back in play.
Show/Hide Lesson Notes and Q&A

The Problem: Many golfers assume they can’t use a hybrid or wood in a fairway bunker, fearing they won’t clear the lip or get enough distance.

The Tool: Modern hybrids—specifically 5 or 6-hybrids—are highly lofted and designed to get the ball up quickly.

The Setup: Position the ball slightly more toward the center of your stance compared to a normal fairway shot.

The Swing: Use a regular golf swing, but remember that you are still intended to take some sand to facilitate the escape.

The Benefit: Using your most lofted hybrid allows you to maximize distance while ensuring the ball clears the bunker’s edge.

Questions and Answers

A: Kellie recommends using your most lofted hybrid, such as a 5-hybrid or 6-hybrid, to ensure you get the height needed to escape.

Q: Can I really use a hybrid in a fairway bunker?

A: Yes! Highly lofted hybrids are fantastic for clearing the lip in front of you while still gaining significant distance.

Q: Which hybrid is best for this shot?
