Playing a Bunker Shot Out of Hard Sand

LPGA Professional Instructor Kathy Nyman demonstrates what to do when your golf ball is on hard sand in the bunker.

Remember to square up the clubface of your wedge to hit a better shot out of a bunker with hard sand (or if there’s not much sand in the bunker). If you open the clubface like you would for an explosion shot, the bottom of the club will bounce up and hit the middle of the ball giving you a skulled shot over the green.

So, grab your sand wedge and stick your feet in the ground just a little bit with the ball a little bit further forward in your stance. With no movement of your lower body hold the clubface square and hit it like a chip shot out of the bunker.

And that’s how you get out of a hard pan bunker.
