Lesson Notes: Driver Setup for Success
The Goal: To set up properly with the driver to launch the ball high, straight, and far by ensuring you catch the ball cleanly on the upswing phase of your swing arc.
The Lower Body & Ball Position Routine:
- Start with your feet completely together next to the ball.
- Take one large step toward your trail side.
- Take one small baby step toward your lead side.
- This specific sequence automatically places the ball in the front of your stance, properly lined up closer to your lead foot.
The Upper Body & Tee Height Blueprint:
- Tee Height: Always tee the golf ball up high enough so that half of the ball sits completely above the crown of your driver head.
- Lead Arm: Hold the club while maintaining a nice, long, and straight lead arm to ensure comfortable spacing between your body and the ball.
- Spine Tilt: Settle into an athletic posture, but introduce a slight upper body tilt back behind the golf ball.
- Head & Chest: Explicitly keep both your head and your chest behind the ball at setup, which makes it much easier to get the face square and hit upward on the ball.
FAQ
Q: Why is hitting the ball on the upswing so important when using a driver?
A: Unlike irons, hitting up on a teed-up driver optimizes your launch conditions. It allows you to launch the ball higher into the air with less overall spin, helping you maximize total distance and carry.
Q: How do I check if my upper body posture is correct before swinging?
A: Look down at your setup and ensure that your head and chest are visibly positioned behind the golf ball, rather than leaning or stacking directly over it. This position should feel balanced, stable, and athletic.
