Tip the Clubhead Up to Play Better Chip Shots

Cathy Kim shows how to stop the heel of your club from digging in the ground and hit nice clean chip shots from the center of the clubface every time.

Your Action Plan

What: Your goal is to adjust your club setup for the bump and run shot to prevent the heel of the club from digging into the turf.

Why: When the heel of the club sits flush or low to the ground, it tends to dig in early, resulting in a fat shot and inconsistent contact.

How:

  • Tip the Club Upright: Instead of letting the club sit flat, tip the club more upright so the toe is down and the heel is slightly up.
  • Adjust Your Stance: This upright position requires you to stand a little closer to the ball.
  • Clean Contact: By adopting this “towed down” setup, you will be able to hit a clean shot with the center of the clubface every time.
