The Tuck, Turn and Roll Drill

LPGA Professional Instructor Maria Palozola's Tuck, Turn and Roll drill will get you striking your irons with force and control.

The Tuck, Turn & Roll Drill is a great drill for any player who struggles with their release. Whether it is casting, releasing early, flipping through impact or lack of body rotation this drill will teach you how to properly deliver the club to impact with force and control.

Summary:

  • Take a set up and swing up to the top of your backswing. Stop completely at the top of your swing.
  • Next, keeping your rear arm and rear elbow bent unwind your shoulders so that your rear elbow tucks in against the front of your rear hip. Let your hips open slightly as you do this. Pause here.
  • The next step is to rotate your hips and chest into your impact position. This puts your hips open (stomach facing target) and your shoulders square to your target line. Pause here.
  • Finally, release the angle in your rear wrist and let your rear arm roll over your lead arm releasing the clubface. Your arms should be fully extended at this point.

Doing this drill over and over in slow motion and pausing at the various points will help you feel the different parts of your downsing and feel your body parts moving and accelerating in the correct order. After getting the feel for it in pieces try some slow motion swings gradually working your way up to full speed.
