Working with Liz on Her Game

Director of Golf at the Walloon Lake Country Club Pete Kelbel and student Liz Krimendahl share five 'how to' videos from Liz' lesson covering full shots and the short game.

Full Swing Drill

In this first drill we use the green cone to help Liz with her takeaway width.  The tip of the cone sits in line with her toes and it is placed where the hosel of the club (where the shaft is attached to the clubhead) reaches in the back swing.  Notice how Liz takes it back on the right side of the cone.  After clearing the cone in the takeaway, she pulls back with arms extended as she continues to turn her back for “depth”.  This allows her to get an inside attack (in-to-out swing) on the ball from her side of the cone which promotes a draw shot!

40 Yard Pitch Over Bunker Technique

Using her sand wedge Liz has her hands and the ball centred in her stance. Her left foot is slightly open and the clubface is slightly open.  With a letter ‘L’ (wrist hinge) Liz clips the grass out from under the ball as she transfers her weight to the front foot, facing the target with a high finish!

Chip Over Bunker Technique

With this shorter shot Liz uses the same club and set up as the pitch above. The difference is there is more of a letter ‘Y’ (with minimal wrist hinge). Same clipping of the grass and finish facing the target.

Bump and Run Technique

Using her pitching wedge with the ball slightly back in her stance and weight and hands slightly forward (to de-loft for lower flight and more roll when the grass is mowed short in front of the green. The goal is to hit the ball with a smooth knee-to-knee letter ‘Y’ (with minimal wrist hinge).  Once again, clip the grass out from under the ball and face the target in your follow through.

The Ratio Chip

Liz also plays this chip shot with the ball slightly back in her stance and her hands and weight slightly forward. Swing is letter ‘Y’ below the knee to below the knee. See my earlier lesson on How to Chip Using the Ratio Method.

Liz Krimendahl is a long time student with me here at the Walloon Lake Country Club. We have previously featured one of Liz’ lessons about squaring the clubface during impact.
