The Pre-Set Impact Drill You Can Do Indoors

This is a great drill from Maria Palozola for learning to return the club to the ball with perfect impact alignment maximizing both control and distance.

Step by Step

First, take a club and set up in your address position.

Next, without making a backswing simply forward press yourself into your impact position. Note that impact is totally different than address. At impact, your hips should be turned towards the target with your weight shifting onto your front foot and your back heel raising a bit off the ground. Your head should still be slightly behind the ball and shoulders square to your target line.

At this point, your hands will be slightly ahead of the clubhead with the shaft leaning towards the target.

Spend a few minutes going back and forth from address to impact to get a feel for the different positions.

Once you’ve got the hang of it try making a full backswing (if you have room) and returning the club to the new perfect impact position you have learned. After some time, this feel will translate to your full shots on the golf course.
