Get Your Swing Tempo Right for More Distance

Christina Ricci shows why the ideal tempo for solid strikes and greater distance is a slower-paced backswing with a gradual increase of speed.

I see too many players with their swing tempo speed in a non-optimal spot. It is either too quick during the backswing, too quick from the top… or both!

In this video lesson, I share where your swing tempo should be and how to get there. So, let’s get to it.

Apologies for the low def quality of the video in Christina’s lesson. It’s a bit blurry on larger screens. I will ask Christina for a high definition version and replace it if possible.

If you want more pars, let’s make sure that your tempo is promoting optimal distance. Now, what do I mean by that?

I see a lot of players who are super quick in the backswing… super quick in the transition… and there’s no way they can get the max acceleration from the ball forward. That’s where the max acceleration should be. So, if you’re fast in your backswing, oftentimes you’re not going to be able to set at the top of your swing.

When you see the pros, there’s a slight, ever-so-slight pause before they transition. If you’re super-fast, you’re basically making it very challenging to get that pause. What you’re going to do, most likely is to be fast and then even faster …but in the wrong spot in the swing, resulting in a miss-hit or not optimizing distance.

So if you want optimal distance, let’s make sure your tempo is optimal. The ideal tempo is a slower-paced backswing with a gradual increase of speed. The max speed is from the ball forward. I like to think of it as a gradual increase in speed. This is going to allow you put the speed in the right spot. So, if you want more pars, let’s get the speed in your golf swing in the right spot.

Welcome to Women's Golf Established 2014
Jane and Richard Filing at St Andrews

Why Women's Golf is different.

We're not part of some big media company. My husband Richard and I started Women's Golf from our living room because I couldn't find golf lessons that were truly designed for women golfers. I wanted to create the kind of place I wished had existed, a welcoming and ad-free home where golfers like us could learn from the world's best instructors.

We bought the domain name at an auction and I started contacting the world's best teachers. My job is to look after all our members, our instructors and the lessons we share, while Richard takes care of the technology behind the scenes that keeps Women's Golf running.
