Stop Your Backswing Sway With This Simple Awareness Drill

A sliding or swaying backswing kills consistency. LPGA Class A Instructor Cathy Kim shares a clever sensory test using an everyday item to immediately fix your hip sway, stabilize your knee, and create a powerful pivot.

Lesson Notes: Stabilizing Your Lead Knee to Stop a Sway

The Goal: To eliminate a destructive backswing sway by identifying an unstable lead knee and learning the proper directional movement for a solid pivot.

The Root Cause of a Backswing Sway

  • An Unstable Lead Knee: A lateral sway off the golf ball is often rooted directly in a highly unstable left knee (for right-handed players).
  • Incorrect Twisting: When taking the club back, an unstable knee will naturally twist laterally toward the right, pulling your entire lower body off the target line.

The Heel-Object Practice Drill

  • Set the Object: Take a small, everyday object like a sunscreen bottle and place it firmly on the ground right next to the inside of your left heel.
  • Track the Direction: As you turn into your backswing, focus on making sure your left knee moves forward toward the ball line rather than sliding or twisting over to the right.
  • The Sensory Feedback: If you slide or sway off the ball during the movement, you will instantly feel your body shifting incorrectly relative to that object.

The Down-the-Line Checkpoint

  • Visible Target: If someone looks at your swing from a down-the-line camera view, the sunscreen bottle must remain completely visible past your legs.
  • Hidden Target: If the object is blocked from view during the backswing, it serves as an immediate visual confirmation that your lower body has swayed.

FAQ

Q: How does a forward-moving lead knee stop me from swaying during the turn?

A: When your lead knee moves slightly forward toward the ball line, it acts as a structural anchor that allows your hips to turn dynamically in place. If that knee instead collapses and twists laterally toward your trailing foot, the anchor is lost, causing your entire torso to slide away from the target.

Q: Why is a lateral backswing sway so detrimental to consistent ball striking?

A: Swaying shifts your spine angle and centers of rotation away from their original starting positions. This forces you to time a massive lateral slide on the way back down just to get your club back to the ball, routinely causing fat hits, thin clips, or severe misses.

Why Women's Golf is different.

We're not part of some big media company. My husband Richard and I started Women's Golf from our living room because I couldn't find golf lessons that were truly designed for women golfers. I wanted to create the kind of place I wished had existed, a welcoming and ad-free home where golfers like us could learn from the world's best instructors.

We bought the domain name at an auction and I started contacting the world's best teachers. My job is to look after all our members, our instructors and the lessons we share, while Richard takes care of the technology behind the scenes that keeps Women's Golf running.
