Plugged Ball in the Sand? Try This!

Finding your ball plugged in a greenside bunker can be intimidating. Cathy Kim breaks down the exact club selection, clubface setup, and swing adjustments you need to pop the ball out safely.

Lesson Notes: Escaping the “Fried Egg” Bunker Lie

The Goal: To successfully hit your ball out of a plugged or buried “fried egg” lie in a greenside bunker by using the sand to lift the ball out.

What is a Fried Egg Lie?

  • This happens when a shot into a greenside bunker drives directly down into the sand trap, leaving the ball plugged or buried rather than sitting neatly on top.

Step-by-Step Setup and Execution:

  • Club Selection: Grab a sand wedge or a lob wedge featuring anywhere from 56 to 60 degrees of loft.
  • Club Face Position: Unlike a normal bunker shot where you open the face, you need to square up the clubface just like you are hitting a standard full shot.
  • The Swing: Hinge the golf club up sharply on the backswing, then drive it firmly right down into the sand behind the ball.
  • The Critical Key: You must maintain aggressive acceleration all the way through the shot. Because you are trying to move both the ball and a heavy amount of sand together, slowing down will leave the ball stuck in the bunker.

FAQ

Q: Why do I keep the clubface square instead of opening it like a normal bunker shot?

A: Opening the clubface exposes the “bounce” on the bottom of the wedge, which makes the club skim across the top of the sand. To get a plugged ball out, the club needs to dig deep down underneath the ball, and a square face helps the leading edge cut directly through the sand.

Q: Am I trying to hit the golf ball itself or the sand?

A: You are primarily hitting the sand. The exploding wedge moves a pocket of sand out of the bunker, and that escaping sand carries the buried ball right out along with it.

The One-Piece Takeaway: Stop Over-Shifting Your Weight
A wide takeaway is crucial for a powerful golf swing, but many players ruin their mechanics by over-exaggerating the movement. LPGA Master Professional Karen Palacios Jansen from CardioGolf.com demonstrates how to keep your hands, arms, and shoulders in sync without swaying off the ball.
